India has reported 5 cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), with two cases detected in Tamil Nadu, one in Chennai, and one in Salem. The virus, which causes flu-like symptoms, has recently gained attention after an outbreak in China. The Indian government is monitoring the situation closely and has issued guidelines similar to those followed during the Covid-19 pandemic to ensure preparedness.
Health experts have reassured the public that HMPV is not a new virus and that most of the Indian population is immune to it. The virus was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating globally since then. It primarily affects children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems, causing symptoms such as cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath.
The governments of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Delhi have issued guidelines to ensure preparedness for potential health challenges related to HMPV. These guidelines include measures such as covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, washing hands frequently, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals. The situation is being closely monitored by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other health authorities.
